By Scott Nelles:
"Imagine you and Queen Victoria reviewing the Grand Fleet while cruising aboard your deep water steamer. Perhaps I'm the only "big" boy who still imagines such things, but I'd like to think there are other dreamers, too. The Steam yacht has been a challenge to make, but a very good education all the same. Though the most complex of my boats, the lessons learned in the process have given me a new degree of confidence in creating these works. I've been having a blast!"
Scott Nelles (pronounced nell-ess) has worked in cast bronze for over three decades. His work displays a childlike playfulness, elegant design and superb control of his medium. In his foundry and studio located in northern Michigan, he designs and creates everything from decorative art to toys. Using the timeless methods of sand-casting and hand-finishing, Nelles creates objects of beauty, strength and whimsy.Much of the inspiration for his work actually comes from the process in which he makes it. Cast metal toy cars, boats, and airplanes take him back to his childhood in Detroit, where his father, a manufacturer’s representative, would take Scott on factory tours. The dramatic sight and heat of molten metal became a part of his soul, and the excitement of the foundry process has never left him.
